Book Review: Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing

“Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing: What the Rich Invest in That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!” is written by Robert T. Kiyosaki. I have listened to the audio version of the book. Kiyosabki is more biased towards investing in real estate. He knows little on investing in stocks. He also talks about investing in your own business. Investing has to do with having enterprenueral skills, a team who’s advice is sound and your own judgement.

Rating:3/5. Many ideas repetitive but is dicussed more here.

Book Review: 12 Rules for Life

“12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos” is written by Jordan B. Peterson. I have listened to an audio version of this book. Starting 2-3 chapters seem to be good and then the book wavers a lot from the chapter topics. I am not sure why the author discusses at some point some stuff which is not related to the topics. Though he discusses in depth I feel its only his momentary thoughts and nothing related to topic. Its a book that promotes more of christianity, though it could have been kept away without diluting the content.

Rating:2/5: Topics are good, content loses its grip after the 1st few paragraphs in each chapter. Not a book I would recommend.

Book Review : Inner Engineering

“Inner Engineering: A Yogi’s Guide to Joy” is written by Sadhguru. I have listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Sadhguru. Its book that mostly deals with Indian mystiscism, yoga and gives some practical exercises to get in sync with one’s inner self. The book starts with short biography of Sadhguru’s initial journey towards his spiritual enlignment. Some things he discusses from the view point of a mystic. Many he discusses on the practical aspects of spirituality. He discusses things more wrt sharing rather than emphazing his viewpoints. Topics like Yoga, Adiyogi, Tantra,Mantra,Isha Foundation etc are discussed.

Rating:4/5. A good book, written honestly with the aim of improving the quality of life, lessen the burden of material possession and bring overall happiness to one’s existence.

Book Review: Rich Dad’s Guide to Becoming Rich

“Rich Dad’s Guide to Becoming Rich…Without Cutting Up Your Credit Cards” is written by by Robert T. Kiyosaki and Sharon L. Lechter. I have listened to an audio version of this book. This book mainly talk about the topic of good debt and bad debt. A good debt is a loan that you take for buying an asset and a bad debt is the one where the loan takes care of your expenses. As long as its a good debt there is nothing much to lose. Better than this would be to use other people’s money. The book also has most of the advertising of his products. He does not talk about the how and only leads a direction.

Rating: 3/5. Its a good book and mostly repetitive concept. Not much researched, nothing much to gain.

Book Review : Mindwise

“Mindwise: How We Understand What Others Think, Believe, Feel, and Want” is authored by Nicholas Epley. Its a book concerned with mind reading so to say. The author lays the foundation that is very difficult to guess what the other person is thinking. Even if we put ourselves in the other person’s shoes its difficult to imagine what she/he thinks, unless we have had a very similar experience ourselves. So to really understand someone we need to communicate and ask the other person. This is the most simple way to understand the other. Body language may reveal a lot but it will never be precise.

Rating: 4/5. The book has many findings which I may have already come across. Its theme resonates a unique good idea that communication is the key to understanding others.

Book Review : The Art of Thinking Clearly

“The Art of Thinking Clearly” is written by Rolf Dobelli. I have listened to an audio version of this book. This book I had completed last year and am reviewing it after long gap. Might not be accurate. This book about a number of tips which will help one in decision making. Its a book that takes note of our baises that go into decision making. It gives us a sense of why we are subjective rather than objective when approaching various circumstances in life.

Rating: 3/5. Book with lot of discussion on out biases. Nothing new but is interesting.

Book Review : A New Earth

“A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” is written by Eckhart Tolle. I have listened to the audio version of this book. In this book the author meditates on the subject of ego and describes the various relationship with ego. It is our ego that is not allowing us to live in the present. Our true self is beyond our ego, once we realize this, slow we could move towards living in the moment. This is the foundation of gaining a new ground or new earth as the author puts it. The author does express some of the thoughts rather with more dramatization. As we pass through the book we understand our own experience of ego while reflecting.

Rating: 4/5. It is an amazing book that dwells on our understanding of our ego. It is another good spiritual book by the author after “Power of now”.

Book Review: Make It Stick

“Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning” is a book by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III, Mark A. McDaniel. I have listened to the audio version of this book. Its a well written and researched book. The authors discuss on the various aspects of improving the cognitive ability. They are more concerned with cognitive science or the science of learning. They  tell stories, share experiences and research in this field. At first I thought its going to be great book. But realized soon that many things I knew. One thing actually learnt – keeping something in memory through mnemonics is not equivalent to learnings. It only mean one is organizing information for retrieval. The authors discuss about some strategies like mental model (mental palaces), interleaving, recalling, teaching, relating etc. will improve the learning ability.

Rating: 4/5. Its a good book discussion on the science of learning. It provides good useful tips for students, teachers and professionals involved in the field of learning, school and academics.

Book Review : Ayurveda- The Science of Self-Healing

“Ayurveda: The Science of Self-Healing” is written by Vasant Dattatray Lad. Its a very good book for anyone who might be interested in pursuing a career in Ayurvedic healing and would want to know the basic principle and the diagnosis methods employed towards treatment. It also expands on yoga, everyday routines, diet and many home remedies. Personally, I have some health issues going so thought I should have a try at this holistic practice. The take away for me would be that ayurveda unlike allopathy functions more towards the harmonization of human as a system/universe in itself. Its practices are aligned with this treatment mode.

Rating: 4/5. Concise and precise, a good introductory on ayurveda, addresses everyone, professional and layman.

Book Review : The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking

“The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking” is written by by Edward B. Burger and Michael Starbird. I have listened to the audio version of this book. The authors present an approach to effective thinking with 5 parts – fire, earth, water, air and change. “Fire, Earth, Water and Air” are concerned with how to effectively challenge a notion and actively participate in questioning an approach (like “what if”,”what’s correct”, “what’s wrong”). Through this inquiry one could try to challenge and solve problems. One should be willing to “change” to develop this inquiry mindset.

Rating: 3/5. The ideas presented are well known already. The presentation of book is good and concise.
